A four-year-old girl is in a critical but stable condition in Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital, after a house fire in the suburb of Mayfield overnight.
Five other people escaped the blaze, which flared at about 3:30 this morning at the back of the house.
Police and fire investigators returned to the scene today to examine the home, which was severely damaged.
The cause isn’t known.
