FORMER NRL STAR TACKLES INDIGENOUS GAMBLING
Former league star Ashley Gordon was in Lismore today tackling the issue of problem gambling in indigenous communities.
As part of a state government campaign, Gordon is visiting Aboriginal communities across New South Wales, which have been identified as problem gambling areas.
Gordon wants to personally make sure the issue’s not put on the backburner.
“One of the main roles is to identify an Aboriginal safe gambling ambassador for this area and one of their roles is to set up a committee that I can work with and they can work with because once I leave I want gambling to stay on everyone’s agenda.”
Research shows that Aboriginal people gamble at much higher rate than the average Australian, mainly due to financial hardships.
The help line 1800 PLAY IT SAFE has been set up to support indigenous gamblers.
