BYRON COUNCIL VOTES TO SELL ROUNDHOUSE

The Ocean Shores community has lost its fight to retain the iconic Roundhouse building.

The matter was discussed at a general council meeting today, with Byron Shire councillors locked at four-all until Mayor Jan Barham used her casting vote to knock back the proposed $5 million arts and cultural centre.

The Roundhouse Action Group had developed a plan for a multi-purpose cultural facility, including 21 holiday units which would have generated income and avoided any costs to council.

The decision means the cash-strapped Byron council will now subdivide and sell most of the 1.4 hectare site.
