CLOSE COUNT IN STATE SEATS OF NEWCASTLE AND SWANSEA
A new era has begun in Hunter politics after labor’s crushing defeat in Saturday’s election.
While the ALP has held on in the seats of Wallsend and Cessnock, Charlestown has been won by Liberal Andrew Cornwell, and Maitland has fallen to Liberal Robyn Parker.
The seats of Newcastle and Swansea hang in the balance.
As counting continues in Newcastle, Liberal Tim Owen is ahead of Labor’s Jodi McKay.
While in Swansea, the Liberals’ Garry Edwards is just ahead of Labor’s Robert Coombes.
The Nationals George Souris has retained Upper Hunter.
The Liberals Craig Baumann increased his vote in Port Stephens.
And Independant Greg Piper has held the seat of Lake Macquarie.
