NEWCASTLE COUNCIL MATTERS: ALDI SUPERMARKET & REGAL

Newcastle Council officers have recommended revised plans for an Aldi supermarket at Fletcher be approved.

The initial proposal was knocked back by council, but the retail chain was granted a conditional green light by the Land and Environment Court last month.

The new application sees a reduction in the size of the store and carpark, and an increase in the number of trees to be retained.

Some residents remain concerned about traffic, noise and the possible overshadowing of homes.

Meanwhile, a group of Newcastle councillors will tonight try to stop a plan to sell the Regal Cinema at Birmingham Gardens.

They’re instead calling for the re-opening of the facility, but council officers are recommending the site be sold, with proceeds to go to a community project.

The state government recently awarded a $140,000 grant to the Friends of the Regal group, for making the building structually sound.
