The Newcastle Knights deny they cut former club great Andrew Johns from his part-time coaching position, but admit they couldn’t match his asking price which they say doubled from last season.
It follows a report today suggesting Newcastle forced Johns to end his long-term relationship with the club he won two premierships with.
The Knights said they remained hopeful of retaining him on a pro-rata arrangement before today’s news broke he would be joining Rugby franchise the Melbourne Rebels.
