The Hunter’s most senior police officer has retired from the force, due to ongoing health problems.
Assistant Commissioner Lee Shearer will be replaced by Carlene York, the head of the police force’s forensic services group.
In 2004, Ms Shearer became the first female officer to be appointed to head the Newcastle Local Area Command.
She also became the state’s Northern Region Commander.
