Flames came within metres of houses at Tenambit in the Hunter Valley as fire crews battled a bushfire that’s thought to have been sparked when a stolen vehicle was torched.
Traffic diversions were put in place, and ambulances were on standby as flames licked at backyard fences, after racing across grassland.
Swirling winds caused firefighters to call in reinforcements who gradually gained the upper hand. Mopping up operations continued late into the day.
