PORT STEPHENS FIRE PATROL
Aerial spotters, a water bombing plane and fire fighters from throughout the lower Hunter headed to bushfire outbreaks around Raymond Terrace on Tuesday afternoon.
Locals manned the garden hoses, several elderly residents were helped from their homes and one fire fighter was treated for smoke inhalation after battling flames along backyard fences on the southern outskirts of town.
The main hot spots were near the Muree Golf Course and toward Heatherbrae where fire also licked the Pacific Highway and smoke forced the closure of traffic lanes.
Brigades gained the upper hand toward evening, heading off spotfires and preparing for a forecast wind change.
