1888 CUP TROPHY AT GLASSHOUSE

Just in time for Port Macquarie’s own racing carnival, a celebration of the Melbourne Cup is taking place at the Glasshouse Gallery.

The trophy of 1888 is on loan from the National Gallery of Australia and features three horses cast in solid silver.

It was commissioned from England and referred to as the Centennial Cup as a celebration of the 100th anniversary of British settlement in Australia.

The race was won by a horse named Mentor, ridden by jockey Michael O’Brien.

The trophy is on show until the end of this month.
