TANNERY GETS GO AHEAD

The Land and Environment Court has ruled that an Upper Hunter tannery can proceed with a controversial development application, for a property at Aberdeen.
The Walfertan tannery had applied to dispose of effluent by irrigation on its property, but neighbours and the Upper Hunter Council objected, citing concerns about odour and contamination.
Commissioners for the court and legal teams toured the site in March and held a hearing at Aberdeen.
The court has now ruled that the company can proceed under strict conditions, which include establishing buffer zones, and observing weather conditions to avoid overspraying.
