An investigation into a fish farm failure at Port Stephens has found that large barnacles and strong seas caused a pen to release 20,000 yellowtail kingfish last month.
It’s believed the barnacles damaged ropes, which put a strain on the nets.
The company in charge will implement a more stringent maintenance and monitoring system as a result.
The DPI has recaptured around 5,000 kingfish so far.
