GUNNEDAH FLUORIDE PLANS ON HOLD

Plans to fluoridate Gunnedah’s water supply have been put on the backburner.

The Health Department asked the council to investigate the idea earlier this year, with the aim of improving oral health.

But a community survey has revealed only half of the 440 respondents connected to town water supported the plan.

Mayor, Adam Marshall says there was also some consideration given to the ongoing or current costs of maintaining the infrastructure associated with fluoridating the Gunnedah supply between 50 and $60,000 per annum.

The council will however push ahead with chlorinating the town’s drinking supply to remove bacteria.
