DEAD WHALE AT VALLA BEACH

A dead humpback whale discovered this morning on a north coast beach may have been struck by a vessel.

The eight-metre male humpback was washed ashore north of Valla Beach.

The mammal, which is thought to be around three years old, was part of the annual northern migration of whales which begins each May.

A National Parks spokesman said collisions between whales and vessels have increased as whale numbers grow by around four per cent each year.
