UNE LECTURER HEADS TO HEAD HIGH COURT
UNE law lecturer, Bryan Pape, has arrived in Canberra for a special High Court hearing.
Mr Pape is challenging the Rudd Government’s $900 stimulus payments, claiming they breach the Tax Bonus Act and the constitution.
The commonwealth is defending the case, arguing the payments are necessary for stimulating the economy.
A full bench of the High Court will consider the challenge in a two-day hearing.
The government is due to start paying the bonus in April, as part of its $42-billion economic stimulus package.
