FARMERS SLAPPED WITH HIGHER RATES
The region’s farmers are facing an increase in rates by the newly formed Central North Livestock Health and Pest Authority.
The body was set up in January following a restructure of the state’s rural lands protection boards.
47 have been reduced to 14 in a bid to reduce state government costs.
Member for Tamworth, Peter Draper, says he’s fielding complaints from farmers over increased charges, with one landholder claiming his rates doubled.
The authrority’s Chief Executive Officer, Steve Orr, admits there has been an increase, but, claims it’s not related to the restructure but a rate review carried out in 2007.
He says the biggest increase farmers will face is $57.
