TOURISM GOLD RUSH

Recent figures show regional tourism is dealing with the economic downturn better than had been expected.

A travel website surveyed 900 rural tourism businesses and found 40 per cent reporting year-to-year growth.

Just 11 per cent described their customers as price conscious, and more than a third were predicting strong growth in 2009.

Tourism Tamworth opened a visitor information centre in Nundle over the weekend and believes smaller communities are ready for their slice of the state’s tourism pie.
