Coffs Harbour MP, Andrew Fraser, is appealing a Supreme Court order that he pay $70,000 for defaming a union official.
The defamation relates to comments Mr Fraser made prior to the last state election.
In a letter to 600 nurses, he accused Brett Holmes of the Nurses Association, of abusing his position to promote a political career.
In June last year a supreme court judge said Mr Fraser’s remarks were defamatory, ordering him to pay court costs.
A decision on the appeal is expected in a matter of weeks.
