Gold Coast Ironwoman Hayley Bateup finished third in the Coolum Ironwoman event, less than 24 hours after being hospitalised when a huge wave burst her eardrum.
It was the first in a day of upsets, a little known Sydneysider beating more fancied favourites Zane Holmes and Shannon Eckstein in the Ironman event.
