CALLS FOR A REVIEW INTO TWEED COUNCIL ELECTION

Now the dust is starting to settle on the Tweed Council election, some candidates are calling for a review into how it was run.
So far, more than 14 per cent of votes have been declared informal.
“I think in my 20-years experience in local government, this has been the lowest turn out ever and the highest number of informal votes ever recorded in Tweed.”
The New South Wales Electoral Commission says the final figures won’t be known until Friday afternoon.
Voting should be ‘first past the post’. The general public does not understand the proportional preferencial system and it is extremely complicated to explain to people. I speak from experience having been a shire councillor for 12 years. I don’t expect the present system will ever be changed thoiugh!
