MAN CHARGED AFTER OFFICER ASSAULTED AT TAMWORTH

A man will front court today after allegedly assaulting an officer in Tamworth on Friday.

Police say an off-duty officer was approached by a man on Kable Avenue around 10.45pm and verbally abused.

The man then allegedly pushed the officer and punched him in the face.

The officer, who was knocked unconscious, was assisted by a bystander who, too, was pushed.

The man then fled the scene.

Following inquiries, a 19-year-old man was arrested at a home on Calala Lane just after midday yesterday.

He was taken to Tamworth Police Station and charged with a number of offences, including assaulting a police officer and causing actual bodily harm.

The man, who is from Manilla, was refused bail to front Tamworth Local Court today.

The officer was treated for bruising to his jaw and neck, as well as a split lip. It’s understood the bystander was not injured.
