It’s been described as a “sky fail”, but last night’s Patricia Piccinini’s Like Us exhibition still attracted thousands to Newcastle’s Civic Park.
Food stalls and live music kept the crowds entertained as crews worked to coax the Skywhale off the ground.
Strong winds delayed the launch for a few hours, but a few short blasts of hot air got her off the ground, if only for a minute.
The fantastical creature was embraced by the crowd on the way down, and later packed up for her next stop.
