Ballina Airport was shut down today following a maintenance hiccup.
For the past week the runway has been re-sealed at night to avoid interrupting flight schedules.
But it’s thought that the heat off an aircraft’s jets cracked and damaged the runway first thing this morning.
Consequently no flights could take off or land, forcing traffic controllers to redirect aircraft to Coolangatta and Lismore.
“It will be reinstalled tonight and the airport will be fully operating tomorrow,” said Mayor of Ballina, Phil Silver.
