GRAFTON JAIL FUTURE
The state government has confirmed it is examining the feasibility of building a new jail at Grafton.
The existing 115-year-old prison, regarded as one of the toughest in the state, currently caters for 270 inmates.
The New South Wales Treasury is conducting the review of prison services in Grafton, but has given no date for a decision.
It’s understood that a new prison, if it goes ahead, would house up to 600 prisoners.
A spokesperson for the government said the study is in its early days and there are no plans to close the existing facility.
