COUPLE TO STAND TRIAL OVER STARVATION OF CHILD

A couple from Port Stephens, accused of starving their daughter to death have been committed to stand trial.

The 46-year-old man and 37-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons are charged with murdering their daughter, who had development delayed autism.

Among the large brief of evidence tendered to Newcastle Local Court, was the autopsy report, which says the cause of the death was “chronic starvation and neglect”.

It was also noted that the 7 year old’s body was “that of an emaciated, dehydrated female child, she weighed 9 kilograms.”

In a police interview, her father explained she hadn’t coped with their move from Sydney to Hawks Nest.

He said she lost weight, “she wasn’t eating the same amount, she was depressed”.
