TRAINS ON OUR TRACKS
It’s been four years since the Murwillumbah to Casino railway was closed, but the heated debate still continues.
Much of the community is calling for the immediate reinstatement of trains on the line for both tourism and commuter purposes.
But recent documents from Byron Shire Council suggest Rail Corp is interested in re-zoning land around the tracks to commercial/residential.
While the proposition is not a sell off of the line, activists say it could comprise future negotiations.
“I really don’t want to give the impression that it’s all over. Quite the opposite I think this is an opportunity to refocus and I think we should turn around and see it as an opportunity to put more pressure on state rail to come clean,” said Byron Shire candidate Dr Patrick Morrisey.
