TEACHERS STRIKE

Hundreds of teachers across the Northern Rivers stopped work today in protest against changes to the state staffing system.

Previously schools across New South Wales were partly staffed using a compulsory transfer system – ensuring all schools had enough teachers.

Teachers were able to take jobs in more remote and undesirable areas, relying on the transfer system to gain them a better placement.

The New South Wales Teachers Federation says without the system teachers could lose any power in the employment process and students will be the ones that suffer.

“It’s really going to have a huge impact on students in less desirable areas. They’re not going to get staff they are simply not going to have qualified teachers standing up in those areas,” said NSW Teachers Federation representative, Nicole Major.

The next protest will be a two-hour stoppage on September the 2nd.
