FARMERS FIGHT BHP COAL QUEST
The battle between landholders and BHP Billiton continues on the Liverpool Plains.
The landholders have asked the company to attend a community meeting and explain an interim report which rules out coal exploration on the floodplains, and would instead focus on the ridge country.
The community action group initially saw the report as a victory, but now is raising concerns that mining could still affect subterranean water.
The action group says it is also concerned that BHP Billiton has only ruled out the floodplains at this stage because current long-wall technology is not efficient enough.
The landholders say they’ll set a date for the meeting when BHP Billiton contacts them.
