Newcastle lifeguard Dale Laverty has died after suffering what’s believed to be a medical episode in the water at Nobbys Beach this morning, during a professional exercise.
He was taken to the John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition after he was found unconscious in the water.
Emergency services were called to Nobbys Beach just before 8am, after reports a man went missing in the water.
Paramedics arrived to treat the man, before he was taken to hospital.
